| As an undergraduate in the Fine Arts Department of the Shanghai Drama Institute, ZHANG Jian-Jun studied oil painting in the standard realist genres. Outside of the classroom, however, he created abstract paintings and works in mixed media on canvas. Five such works were included in the ’83 Experimental Painting Exhibition at Fudan University; four of them were criticized for being abstract, with one—in mixed media—singled out as “strange.” The exhibition was closed after a day and a half due to the newly launched Anti-Spiritual Pollution campaign. In 1989 Zhang moved to the United States and turned to working with ink on paper, media he had employed prior to attending art school. Investigating the fundamental qualities of ink, he created ink painting installations, installations incorporating liquid ink, and paintings combining ink and oil paint. Becoming interested in ways of noting the passage of time in art, for many years he has produced videos, installations, and paintings under the theme of Vestiges of a Process. Vestiges of a Process: Flowing Water and Water ink paintings capture a moment by focusing in on the water’s ever-changing surface, represented by a few deft ink strokes. Touches of oil paint added to the abbreviated ink markings react to changes in ambient light, and vividly suggest the glint of light on flowing water.

| Annelies creates a setting that through the act of "intruding and involvement", several emotions of amazement as well as melancholy of the past and present are awakened and recognized. By creating a "new reality" in a recognizable atmosphere, the viewer is able to walk through his own personal memories, confronted by conflicts between today and the past. By reconstruction of this new reality, the viewer discovers his "own reality" again.

| front line contemporary is exhibiting installation works by ZHANG Lansheng:
An ongoing project which Lansheng started in the mid 1990s, the RECIPE installation consists of a minimum of 12 ready-made mouse traps. The mouse trap is painted with a small "concertina recipe" attached to the bait hook of the trap. Each "recipe" is a chapter containing a quotation from world-renowned figures like politicians, philosophers, artists and scientists. Lansheng was born in Shanghai and received his art training in the city before migrating to Australia in 1989. His works were exhibited in many countries and collected by some of the major art museums internationally (such as V&A, UK). He has worked in a curatorial and advisory role at the Shanghai Art Museum and a number of public art museums and galleries overseas since the late 1980s. He holds a Masters Degree in Art History from the Australian National University and is now a PhD candidate at the Research School-HRC in the ANU. Born in 1979, Cai Hongshuo currently lives in the countryside in Zhejiang where he leads the life of the contemplative recluse, fishing and observing nature, using photography to focus on the inner world of all things and beings. 55 year old HE Saibang's exquisite work has achieved excellence thanks to his ability to put his own very personal visual experience of the world on paper. DONG Wensheng’s conceptual photography uses the natural and architectural elements of Chinese Gardens and other natural landscapes as a stage setting to insert objects the viewer does not expect to see. Framed by background lighting, the artist creates an almost magical space for the viewer to contemplate beauty, intimacy, mystery and engage in a deeper philosophical consideration of the value of life. Cai Ming’s recent series of paintings comes out of an inspired moment in Shanghai, when the artist viewed the sprawling city from the top of Jinmao tower. These works are imbued with the same feeling of awe, the overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, produced by this grand view of the megalopolis that he witnessed that day. Always fascinated by color and form, the classically trained Cai, succeeded in translating a traditional medium into a contemporary subject. The resulting body of works demonstrate Cai’s effort to redefine classical Chinese landscape painting to express modern-day urban landscape. | The inaugural exhibition of our gallery took place in January 2007 and doubled as a fundraising event for the critically ill toddler of artists LIU Zheng and ZHANG Hui in the Beijing art community.
LIU Zheng first made an impact on the Chinese art scene in the late 90s with his gorgeously 'kitschy' beaded tapestries, depicting Chinese yuan/RMB notes of money, famous movie scenes, and several Buddhist statues, all in millions of individually applied beads. This exhibition, however, highlighted several of his later oil paintings. ZHANG Hui is a well known oil painter in China, as is shown through her treatment of the famous 'Beijing Wawa' series, including several fibreglass figures in spashy colors such as orange, electric blue, red, pink and others. front line contemporary donated proceeds from this event to provide medically necessary treatment for this special child in the US in February 2007. | ||
