The use of cartoon imagery has been one of the main trends in visual creativity for Chinese artists born in the 70's. From a sociological standpoint, this is tied to and has its psychological roots in the acted-out feminity and "decadence" of the times.
Zhang Hui is all of that but her works also display a fierce individuality which sets them apart from other artists', making her works unforgettable.
If we look at the Beijing Wawa, the bandaged wounds and slender cigarettes, huge empty pupils, drunken reposes and doll-like painted appearances enhanced by a monochrome use of colour, demonstrate the loneliness and vulerability of her subjects - of herself, the artist.
